Here's a prompt about the Civil War.

Prompt: write a scene where a soldier prepares for battle.

The writing is ugly, but it has to be mine. The jagged letters make out my name on the small white patch I sew onto the back of my tunic.

JAMES C. MERVIN

I pray that Mama and Sis find me, if I am to die in the morning.

General Grant wants to keep on the reds the next day, but a lot of the boys think we shouldn’t.

Tomorrow might be my last day alive, and while that thought scared me two years ago, I only understood it now.

“Well then, God give me grace.”
